Tunnelling on a 1.7km drive for Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line was completed last week.
TBM Durga broke through at Victoria Station to complete one of the tunnelling drives on the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor – a year after being launched from a 17m-deep shaft at Khidderpore.
The second running tunnel is being excavated by TBM Divya, which was launched from the same shaft at Kidderpore in October 2025. The TBM is expected to reach Victoria Station by the end of August.
TBM Durga will now be dismantled and lifted out for maintenance before being relaunched to excavate the 900m-long tunnel between Victoria and Park Street.
The Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor is designed to improve east-west connectivity across Kolkata by linking the southern parts of the city with the central business district.
