Excavation of 27km of tunnels for Lima’s Metro Line 2 has been completed.
The final breakthrough at Station 4 marked a major milestone for what will be Peru’s first fully underground metro line, and Lima’s largest urban mobility infrastructure project.
Consorcio Constructor Metro 2 Lima (CCM2L), comprising Dragados, Webuild, FCC and Cosapi, deployed two 10m-diameter TBMs on the project. The machines excavated at depths of more than 12m beneath the Peruvian capital.
The first 9km of tunnels from Municipalidad de Ate Station to San Juan de Dios Station were built using the NATM.
Line 2 runs along the main transport corridor linking the districts of Ate and Callao, connecting the eastern part of Lima with Peru’s biggest port and Jorge Chávez International Airport.
The project includes the construction and operation of Line 2 and an 8km section of Line 4 – a total of 35km of underground railway, 35 stations, 36 ventilation and emergency shafts, and two rail depots.
Once complete, the new line will enable passengers to cross the city from east to west in approximately 45 minutes, compared with the more than two-and-a-half hour journey by road.
