Tunnelling on the Northern Tunnel of the East Jeddah Tunnel Project has been completed.

The Herrenknecht EPB TBM broke through after excavating 6.88km and installing 5,286 rings for the sewerage tunnel.

The TBM navigated challenging geological conditions, including gneiss, weathered igneous rock, gravel, sand, silt, and weathered gneiss – all while passing beneath densely populated urban areas.

The second TBM is still in operation and segment production for the project is 96% complete.

Thrustboring Construction Company deployed the two 4.12m-diameter TBMs to maximise efficiency from a single central shaft.

The project will create a 14km-long main sewer line between East Haramain Road in the south and the airport pumping station 2.
