Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) has secured a new contract worth about Rs9.01bn ($100.5m) for work on the Tupul–Imphal new Broad Gauge (BG) railway line in Manipur, India.

The mandate has been issued by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to the HCC–VCCL Joint Venture (HCC–VCCL JV), in which HCC has a 65% share.

The Tupul–Imphal BG corridor is described as a key rail link intended to strengthen connectivity in Manipur and neighbouring regions.

Under the new contract, the joint venture will construct New Tunnel28, a main tunnel of around 3.5km. The package also includes full design, engineering and commissioning responsibilities.

The scope extends to designing and proof-checking a Broad Gauge ballast-less track, followed by the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the associated railway systems and structures.

The work further comprises design, supply, erection and commissioning of tunnel ventilation facilities, together with complete electro‑mechanical installations.

Construction of approach roads and other supporting works needed to tie the tunnel into the wider infrastructure are also part of the agreement.

This assignment is one element within the broader programme to extend and upgrade India’s railway system.

HCC has close to a century of engineering experience and has delivered numerous infrastructure schemes, including more than 402km of complex tunnelling works.
