MMC Engineering in JV with Gamuda has won a US$526M design and build contract for a combined highway and flood control tunnel in Kuala Lumpur.
The consortium beat off a challenge from three other firms that comprised Perunding Zaba, Peremba Malaysia and Bayu Pedoman.
MMC Engineering and Gamuda originally put forward proposals to the city government for the tunnel in February before the administration invited tenders.
The 11.5km long tunnel will primarily serve to reduce flooding in the Malaysian capital but the underground link will also incorporate a 4.5km stretch of highway to relieve traffic congestion under Kuala Lumpur.
Detailed design is expected to take about four months to finalise, ready for construction to start by early next year.
