The segments were manufactured at the company’s facility in Lutoryż. Acciona used high-performance concrete (C50/60L and C60/75C) and modern steam-curing chambers, significantly reducing manufacturing time without compromising the strength or quality of the segments.

As manufacturing progressed, the segments were transported to the construction site. The tunnel will consist of two parallel tubes, each with two lanes in each direction, an emergency lane, and 15 cross-passages.

The final phase of excavation of the first tube is currently under way.

Each tunnel ring comprises 10 precast segments, with the lightest weighing approximately 132 tons and the heaviest up to 152 tons.

In 2020, Acciona, in consortium with its Polish subsidiary Mostostal Warszawa, was awarded the design and construction of a 10.3km section of the S19 Expressway, running from the Rzeszów Południe interchange to Babica in south-east Poland.

The contract, valued at approximately €500m, includes a 2.2km twin tunnel. The refurbished TBM has a diameter of just over 15m and is operating at a maximum depth of 70m – making it one of the most technologically advanced infrastructure projects in the country.

The project also includes the construction of two technical buildings and a tunnel management centre.

In 2022, Acciona was awarded a second section of the expressway, between Domaradz and Iskrzynia. This contract, with an approximate budget of €226m, covers the construction of a 12.5km dual carriageway, featuring two lanes in each direction and an emergency lane.
