A tunnel is to hide a section of the A303 road which passes within 200 metres of one of the UK’s most historic sites, Stonehenge, Wiltshire.
Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the Highways Agency as a design consultant for its Scheme, which includes major upgrading of the route North and West of Amesbury, UK, plus a new bypass for the Winterbourne Stoke village.
Stonehenge is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site and among the most sensitive archeological sites in the world. Part of the plan for safeguarding the site and recreating its original landscape involves removing most modern features visible from Stonehenge including the road.
