The US$4.38bn Second Core S-Bahn is a major infrastructure project for the Munich metropolitan area and will comprise 11km of line (7km in twin 7.5m i.d tunnels) and three underground stations. At Munchen Hauptbahnhof, the line will run beneath all existing platform levels of the central station.

German national rail authority Deutsche Bahn awarded the first two contracts worth €865m for the main construction works (VE 10 + VE 30) to Wayss & Freytag, Max Bögl Stiftung & Co, Ed. Züblin and Bauer Spezialtiefbau. This includes work on the western above-ground section, from Laim to Donnersberger Brücke, and the Hauptbahnhof, including the tunnel section from Donnersberger Brücke to Marienhof. Work began in 2019 and is expected to be completed by 2026.
