The 1km-long tunnel and the 1.1km-long viaduct are deisgned to increase road capacity and improve safety in the city. Both structures feature two lanes in each direction.
The project’s main challenges were the mixed geology and the need to maintain traffic flow and urban activity in the surrounding area during construction. To address these challenges, Acciona used a sequential construction system with a carefully controlled excavation progress, together with tailored support and tunnel lining solutions.
The project, commissioned by the Ministry of Natural Defense, is part of broader efforts by the Mexican authorities to improve urban mobility in Baja California by reducing travel times, increasing road network capacity, and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
