AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd will deploy the 5.33m-diameter machine to drive the Bhiwandi-Thane 7.2km tunnel that will connect Kasheli to Mulund (Bhiwandi to Octroi Naka). The Brinhanmumbai Municipal Association project is designed to further strengthen Mumbai’s existing water network.
The TBM, which is designed to excavate through hard rock conditions, will complete the tunnel in a single drive. It will be launched through a 14m diameter shaft at a depth of approximately 133m.
Excavated material will be handled by a combination of horizontal and vertical conveyor systems, which are also supplied by Herrenknecht.
