Acciona has broken ground on New Zealand’s Warkworth to Te Hana road project.

The ceremony, attended by New Zealand prime minister Christopher Luxon, marks the transition from planning to delivery for a project that will improve connection between Auckland and Northland.

The Warkworth to Te Hana project is New Zealand’s largest private public partnership, which Northway, a partnership between Acciona and Aberdeen Investments, is delivering on behalf of the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

Acciona is undertaking the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the project. It involves the construction of 26km of dual carriage way, twin-bore tunnels more than 1km long in the Dome Valley, 15 bridges and more than 10 million m3 of earthworks.

The total overall project cost is approximately NZ$3.6bn (€1.9bn) during its 32-year construction and operating period. This includes a nominal cost of around NZ$3bn (€1.5bn) to design and build the road.

This section is the backbone of the Northland Corridor Programme, a strategic corridor spanning nearly 100km. designed to improve connectivity in the northern part of the country.
