Metrostav Norge has excavated 1km of the Røldal Tunnel.

The salvo to mark the milestone was fired by Frode Lykkebø, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration’s project manager.

Metrostav Norge launched the first salvo for the tunnel from the Seljestad side at the end of September last year and says the project has not been easy from the start.

During the winter, crews worked in temperatures as low as -25 °C and the highly variable geology has also been challenging.

“There are still 10.7km of tunnel to go, so we have many tasks, new challenges and several milestones ahead of us,” the company says on LinkedIn.

The new Røldal tunnel on the E134 between Røldal and Seljestad in Vestland will replace the original 4.6km tunnel built in 1964.

The new tunnel, which is due to open in 2031, will be Norway’s third longest road tunnel.
