All four consortia have submitted applications for both parts of the contract – the eastern and central section of the tunnel, including the railway station and hub; and the western section of the tunnel, including track junctions.
Each part also includes optional elements covering track systems and the design, supply, commissioning and maintenance of handling equipment.
The contract is scheduled to be signed in the first quarter of 2027.
All the companies are headquartered in Poland and backed by Polish capital.
“Participants in the competitive dialogue are highly experienced contractors with extensive project portfolios, so regardless of the final selection we expect timely delivery of this demanding project. Our Polish ‘local content’ is one of the key values in this procedure,” said Centralny Port Komunikacyjny CEO Dr Filip Czernicki.
The tunnel and railway station are among the most important elements of the new airport. The station, including the platform hall, will be partially underground and, with a volume of more than 1.6 million m3, will be nearly three times larger than Warsaw Central Station.
The 6km-long tunnel will have a capacity of around 3.5 million m3 and vary in width from around 50-160m.
At the eastern end, the tunnel will accommodate six tracks, expanding to 12 in the station area –including two through tracks, providing a total of 10 platform faces – before narrowing to six tracks towards the west. The western exit will enable services towards Gdańsk, Wrocław and Łódź, while the eastern end will provide direct connections to Warsaw.
The station and tunnel beneath the new airport are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2032, in line with the opening of the high-speed rail section between Warsaw and Łódź. Further sections of the “Y” network – from Łódź to Wrocław and from Sieradz to Poznań – are expected to be operational by the end of 2035.
