Excavation of the Madrid Metro Line 11 extension between Comillas and Madrid Rio was completed yesterday.

TBM Mayrit, operated by an Acciona, Dragados and Rover joint venture, broke through at the future Madrid Río station after digging 1.114km of tunnel in 75 days.

Work began on March 26 and the 94-diameter Herrenknecht EPB machine advanced at an average rate of 15m per day.

During excavation, the TBM passed beneath the area around the Manzanares River and the M-30 ring road.

The breakthrough event was attended by regional minister for housing, transport and infrastructure of the Community of Madrid Jorge Rodrigo, representatives of the regional government and the joint venture. Acciona was represented by CEO of the Infrastructures division, José Díaz-Caneja.

The joint venture’s contract includes a 6.6km underground metro line extension and the construction of stations at Comillas, Madrid Río, Palos de la Frontera, Atocha, and Conde de Casal – the first two being newly built – as well as seven emergency exits and five ventilation shafts, plus installation of slab track.
