Implenia and Wayss & Freytag celebrated the ceremonial start of excavation of the Auerberg Tunnel in southern Bavaria on July 16.
Under the ARGE Tunnel Auerberg, the two companies are building the 1.9km-long tunnel on behalf of Bavaria’s public works office, Staatliches Bauamt Weilheim.
The two-tube tunnel is a key section of the 3.8km-long, four-lane expansion of the B2 between the end of the A95 near Eschenlohe and Oberau-Nord.
The project is scheduled to be completed in 2031.
Implenia said the ceremonial start was was preceded by extensive preparatory work.
“In particular, the challenging geological conditions at the north portal required innovative solutions and the highest precision in order to create the conditions for the actual tunnel excavation,” the company said.
Thomas Fiest, head of tunnelling Germany and Austria, said the milestone illustrated the technical excellence, interdisciplinary co-operation and professional commitment that distinguished modern infrastructure projects.
