Webuild has completed excavation of the Trebisacce Tunnel with the simultaneous breakthrough at the third and fourth diaphragms.
The structure is the longest tunnel of the Third Mega Lot of the Jonica State Road (SS106).
The company said the 3.3km-long tunnel was one of the most technically complex parts of the project, which it is building on behalf of ANAS (FS Italiane Group).
Built using the traditional excavation method, the two-tube tunnel will allow traffic to bypass the hilly inland area and urban centres along the existing SS106.
The Third Mega Lot is the main project to modernise the Calabrian section of the SS106. It will help strengthen connections along the Ionian corridor among the regions of Calabria, Basilicata, and Puglia.
Webuild has also completed the Avena and Straface viaducts, and continuing work on the 1km-long Annunziata Viaduct.
The Third Mega Lot project includes 13 tunnels – both natural and artificial – totalling 10km, and 16 viaducts covering 7km.
