Polish nuclear power plant developer Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) has applied to the head of the Pomorskie Voivodeship (region) for a construction permit covering the early works for Poland’s first nuclear power plant.

The plant, being developed at the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site in the Choczewo commune in Pomerania on the Baltic coast, will house three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors with a combined installed capacity of 3,750MWe.

The early works involve major earthworks, including the excavation of deep trenches for reactor foundations, wall stabilisation, groundwater protection, and building the onshore sections of the cooling channels.

The scope of works also includes the construction of TBM launch pits, internal roads and a retention basin to collect rainwater and meltwater.

In July, Poland amended regulations to streamline delivery of nuclear power plants. The changes allow certain construction works to be undertaken before licences for the main facilities are granted.

The contractor, Bechtel, is conducting onshore and offshore geological surveys and PEJ is preparing to submit an application for a construction permit in 2027.
