The VIAlliance35 consortium of Ferrovial subsidiaries Cintra and Budimex, Strabag and Invesis has been named as the preferred bidder for the Czech Republic’s €2.9bn D35 highway project.

The Czech Ministry of Transportation project, delivered under a public-private partnership (PPP), includes the construction of two tunnels approximately 4km and 1.3km long.

The design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance contract covers the D35 sections between Opatovec and Staré Město and between Staré Město and Mohelnice, totalling 35.4km of the new highway.

The contract also includes the operation and maintenance of the adjacent 17km section between Litomyšl and Opatovec, bringing the total network under management to approximately 52km.

The D35 is one of the Czech Republic’s most significant transport infrastructure projects. Once completed it improve links between Bohemia and Moravia while helping relieve congestion on existing roads.

Construction is expected to start this year.

Transportation minister Ivan Bednárik said VIAlliance25’s selection – one of three bids submitted – was not based solely on price.

“The selected consortium brings together international companies that have successfully implemented similar PPP projects not only in Europe but also beyond,” he said.

Ferrovial CEO Ignacio Madridejos said the project demonstrated how public-private partnerships could deliver essential infrastructure efficiently and sustainably while supporting the country’s long-term development.
