The TBM that will carve Belgrade’s first metro line is due to arrive at the Port of Pančevo on the Danube as soon as water levels allow.
Over the summer a prolonged drought caused the river’s water levels to fall critically low across much of Central and Eastern Europe, which disrupted river operations including river cruises, cargo shipping, and regional energy infrastructure.
Assembly of the 10m-diameter, 1,800 tonne TBM is due to start in November and tunnelling is scheduled to commence in late summer 2027.
Alstom will deliver the €915m Line 1, connecting Makiško Polje to Karaburma. It will be Serbia’s first fully-automated metro system.
The 15km-long Metro Line 1 will include 11km of tunnels and 15 stations.
The Belgrade Metro will eventually comprise three lines over a 70km network with 72 stations. The three lines will connect nine municipalities: Novi Beograd, Zvezdara, Zemun, Vračar, Palilula, Stari Grad, Čukarica, Voždovac and Savski Venac.
The second line is planned for the Mirijevo–Bežanija route, while the third line will run between Bežanija and the BIO4 Campus.
