Autostrade per l’Italia and Webuild have signed an €803m contract for the construction of Lot B of the Genoa undersea road tunnel.

Webuild was awarded the contract for the port area project in July.

Lot B is the most complex section of the project to improve transport links in Genoa and enhance connections between the city and the port, one of the Mediterranean’s main logistics hubs.

The overall route will extend approximately 4.2km, including more than 3km of two parallel tunnels, one for each direction, which form the central section of the road.

The tunnel will connect San Benigno, to the west, with Viale Brigate Partigiane in the Foce district, passing beneath the port basin, where it will reach a minimum depth of more than 40m, before rising again beneath the hill of the Carignano district.

Webuild will excavate the tunnel using a 16m-diameter TBM – one of the largest ever deployed in Italy. The company says excavating beneath the port and urban areas made the project one of the most challenging underground structures to be built in Italy.

Deputy commissioner for the reconstruction of Genoa, Carlo De Simone, said Lot A works, which commenced in 2024, were nearing completion. This has involved demolition and site preparation work, a 410m-long railway tunnel, the new port road network, and the Fosso San Bartolomeo floodway.
